How to Choose (What new breeders should know before purchasing Checkered Giants)

  • First go to the ARBA Standard and read what the Standard's qualifications for Checkered Giants. If you already own some rabbits, do an inventory and see your rabbits strengths and weaknesses. Write these down as you watch your rabbits move on the table. Look at the type, color, and especially look at your rabbits TYPE, and markings. It helps to have an experienced breeder come to your rabbitry and help as they will see different views.

  • If type is what you need, look for the best quality buck you can find and do watch the stray spots as the buck WILL throw these spots.

  • If you are considering getting started in Checkered Giants, go to local shows and discuss the breed with other Checkered Giant Breeders. Go on the internet and locate the State Clubs and American Club and their secretaries will gladly help you with finding local breeders.

  • Go to a breeder's rabbitry and look at the size of all the rabbits, pens, and what he is feeding. You may want to start with a trio of juniors. Ask to see the rabbits you pick out to perform on the running table and look at the good and bad points, because when you breed you will get both, the good and the bad.

  • Make a list of questions to ask.
